He cited Japan and Italy as examples, where temperature limits for ACs already exist. What Is the New AC Rule?

As heatwaves intensify across India, the government is introducing a temperature control policy for all air conditioners. Under the new rule, you won’t be allowed to cool a room below 20°C or heat it above 28°C. Whether you’re at home, in the office, or in a vehicle, the AC settings will be limited to this range.

Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced this update during a press conference on Tuesday. He explained that the policy aims to promote energy conservation, cut down on electricity usage, and support climate action goals.

Why Is This Rule Being Introduced?

The primary goal is to reduce power consumption. Lower temperature settings require more energy, which adds to electricity bills and harms the environment. By setting a minimum and maximum limit, ACs will operate more efficiently and help balance the country’s energy demand.

In addition, this move supports India’s long-term sustainability goals. Countries like Japan and Italy have already implemented similar regulations — Japan limits ACs to 26°C, while Italy caps it at 23°C.

Currently, many AC models can run as low as 16°C. However, once this rule is enforced, new ACs in the market will have built-in restrictions. Manufacturers will need to adjust their product designs to comply. For consumers, this means better energy efficiency and lower power bills in the long run.
